Should abortion services expand for young women and anyone else without the money for a safe operation?

Before you judge, please let me explain why I ask this. I’ve personally gotten one, and for me, it was NOT the right decision. However, it’s a fact that many women, especially if they are under 18, have been so desperate to alter their situation either without their parents finding out or for whatever other reason that they’ve hurt themselves to the point of death, i.e. Geraldine Santoro, or they will go to cheap, unsanitary places where the operator isn’t even a full licensed doctor, i.e. Becky Bell. I feel lucky I was able to tell my parents, so we made sure that the place I went to was clean. Now I feel torn. I want to tell all women just to not do it, IT’S HORRIBLE. But there will always be women who feel that is the best decision for them. I don’t know whether I should stand for anti-abortion altogether or maybe that would cause further problems, so maybe clinics should improve somehow so that at least the mother will not die. (Better doctors, more counseling…) What does everyone think of this?

Not. How about using those funds for Preventive Measures? Sometimes, I think if I was a girl and the way I’m addicted to sex as a male, would I have been as a girl. Probably and I would have taken the Preventative measures to ENJOY sex, (promiscuous, ‘hoish,) making sure NOT to get pregnant.

follow-up – Your question is not a matter of for abortion or not, but I’ve dated some women with infants and I really can’t take raising a baby. I enjoy sex too much to want to have kids. however if an unplanned should happen, I would (not a proud or bragging act) sell it on the black market to these people wanting a baby. I could not see myself (if female) or my girlfriend going through an abortion. I would not want see the continuous cycle, as this would be a more available option, being done.

I feel some abortions are ok. In cases of rape, incest, the health of the Mother or if it is determined the fetus has some serious defect. I am not for wholesale abortions. For people who just had sex and decided not to take and precautions. But I do think there needs to be more Access to abortion when it is warranted. Especially for the poor.

Absolutely, yes, there should be provision for all women to get abortions if they need them. A woman’s body belongs to her, she has every right to say what happens to it- the life of a full-grown woman (or a girl who is almost there) is more important than that of a foetus or embryo which cannot survive on its own and may not even be very developed.

In the UK, our health service means that girls can get abortions for free, as long as two doctors agree that its the best way forward.

I think that women shouldn’t be judged by having an abortion, even if they just don’t want a child- people make mistakes after all. It’s better to avoid bringing an unwanted baby into the world, especially as there are more children put up for adoption than there are prospective parents.

Having said that, getting abortions repeatedly because you just can’t be bothered to use contraception makes someone an idiot.

I must say I find it mind boggling that people pay for terminations of pregnancy in the US.

In the UK and in NZ (2 places I have lived), you can get them free on the health service – and although there is an option to go privately (through a few private providers all who are highly regarded and are fully registered private hospitals), there is no reason an woman who wants to terminate a pregancy can not access a provider.

It always makes me wonder with the paying whether there is a later than average time for termination (I am sure someone could find research on this somewhere).

At the end of the day, free or cheap, accesable contraceptive services need to be provided alongside safe abortions – because it is better that conception is prevented.

I’m sorry, but no. I know that women will get them anyway, but that’s their choice. If you truly think that it’s wrong, then it’s wrong. You shouldn’t make it easier/cheaper for them to terminate the life of their child.

I like this analogy….robbing a bank is wrong. Bank robbers can get shot and killed while robbing a bank. Should we take away the guns from security guards? People are going to rob banks anyway so shouldn’t we make it safer for them? The answer is of course, no. I hate that argument from the pro-choice side. "If you outlaw abortion, women will get them anyway and die from unsanitary conditions." Well, if its wrong and illegal, they’re experiencing the consequences of their choice.

I have the utmost compassion for women and I don’t think they’re horrible, awful people if they choose to abort but I will never do anything to advance abortion. I give money to a crisis pregnancy center that provides services, medical care, money to women with unplanned pregnancies.
