I’m going to have an abortion, but I don’t want my parents finding out. I share the same health care plan with them. I was wondering if it will show up on the bills.
The only way for it not to show up on the insurance is not to use insurance. While most insurance companies do cover elective abortion, many abortion clinics do not process the claims for you. You would have to pay in advance and then send the claim in to your insurance company. If you want to do this, you’ll have to ask the clinic for an itemized receipt so that you can send it in with your claim.
What would usually show up on an insurance statement would likely be an ultrasound and something listed as Surgery. Abortion providers themselves usually have vague sounding medical names for their companies – so that the charges on a credit card or check or something don’t scream "abortion" and if your parents were to call the clinic, there is confidentiality. The clinic would not tell anyone what you came in for.

No. Considering abortions aren’t really covered by your medical insurance, they won’t see a thing. How old are you though? Because some places won’t let you have one unless you’re with a legal guardian or parent or you are 18 yrs old. Abortion clinics know the value of a secret because why the hell else would anyone be wanna to get one? No one is ever proud to get an abortion. When I was 17 I was worried about my dad finding out, but you can tell them that you want it kept confidentially and more than likely they’ll tell you that they have a confidentiality policy.

I work at a hospital in the insurance and billing…
It will ABSOLUTELY show up on your insurance bill to your insurance company, but that doesn’t mean your parents will know, HOWEVER, they will get the bills in the mail for costs of it, have you thought about how you will handle getting all of that in the mail?
The only way it won’t show up on your insurance is if you don’t use your insurance, usually planned parenthood and other places like that, have a confidential way of helping you without billing your insurance at all. That may be a better option for you.
I do not know your circumstances of why you are having an abortion and believe in the right to choose, but trust me, your parents are just normal people and you will realise that when you get older, they may take it better than you think. They may be supportive in your choice to abort and you could really use the support. There are health risks for you to have it done, you may need more help after you get home. Think about it! Parents are just like you, they are just older. They really aren’t as scary as you think,
God bless you and I wish you all the best

The ignorance of some of these people is astounding. There’s only one state in the Union which makes it illegal for abortion to be covered in private insurance companies and that’s Idaho.
Contrary to many of the uninformed posts, most (about 70%) of private insurance DOES cover abortion, both elective and therapuetic. However, unless she is listed (and paid for) on your policy, your girlfriend cannot use your insurance coverage. In addition, many abortion clinics do not accept insurance as direct payment (you would have to pay them, then get your insurance to reimburse you).
In most areas of the US, a first trimester abortion costs between $300-500 (second trimester prices go up every week after 11 weeks). If you need it to be confidential, you can find your local abortion fund at http://www.nnaf.org/
Yes, it will show up that a service was used on their insurance, there will probably be a bill or notification in the mail a couple weeks afterward.
If you need it confidentially. . . .
If you go to a Planned Parenthood clinic that has a low-income program it can be as cheap as 100$. If you tells them you have no job, no money and no support they will likely have you pay the minimum for the procedure and get donations to cover the rest. 1-800-230-PLAN (1-800-230-7526) to find the Planned Parenthood clinic nearest you. If you are underage it will mostly likely be free and it’s always confidential.
You have the choice between the pill (which can be taken up to 11weeks, at home or at a friends house) or the vacuum method (in clinic procedure). Personally I used the pill method so I could be at home with my husband but some women want to have the surgical, so it’s done and over with when they leave the clinic.
You will be financially screened – usually this goes on the honor system, weight/height taken, blood pressure checked, pricked -fingertip- to check for rH factor and anemia, you will receive an ultrasound or sonogram to determine gestational age. You may be asked if you want to view the image, this is up to you. You will receive antibiotics, anti-nausea tabs and pain meds. Take them ALL. You must finish at the very least your course of antibiotics. Follow all aftercare instructions and go back to your after care appt. This last step is vital, you must go back for your aftercare appt! Abortion begins a new menstrual cycle. You should have a regular period in 4 to 8 weeks.you should have the option of receiving birth control – again this will most likely be free, take it and use it correctly.
If you are underage you may want to check this site out to see about parental consent laws and whatnot. http://www.sexetc.org/state *Even if it says you need parental consent, you don’t. Call PP and tell them you cannot tell your parents; by law, a judicial bypass must be available to those minors who just cannot get their parents/guardians permission. A judge signs the parental consent acting as a de facto guardian. Abortion funding http://www.nnaf.org/help.html
Some state medicaid program do pay for it, use this link and figure out if your state covers it. If they do, you can go to "welfare" office and get emergency coverage and the state and taxes will help pay for it. http://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/book/companion.asp?id=20&compID=64
If you have any more questions or want/need to talk about it drop me an email.
It is entirely possible to have an abortion and not feel guilt because you knew it was the right thing to do.
